HOPE CHAPEL MISSIONS – Hermosa Beach

Raising money for our church’s worldwide missions is my primary focus as I do this walk.  We have a thriving group of full-time missionaries as well as short-term teams who serve around the world in places such as Mexico, Israel, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Swaziland, Uganda, South Africa, China, Cambodia, New Zealand and right here in the USA. Miraculous work is being done through these devoted people!

How to donate:

Online:
Go to Hope Chapel and click ‘Give’
Log in (or register for an account)
Choose the ‘Giving’ tab, then ‘Click Here to Give Now’
Fill out the payment info, including the amount you wish to donate
Select Hope Chapel Missions in the drop-down menu under ‘Designated Fund’
In the comments section, be sure to write Soles 4 Hope so we can keep track of donations that were generated through my trek.
You also have the option of designating your gift to a specific missionary from the list found HERE . Note that you will not see Soles 4 Hope on this list, as it’s not a mission in and of itself – but a mission to FUND the others!

So that we can keep track of donations that were generated through my trek, be sure to write Hope Chapel Missions/Soles 4 Hope on the ‘Memo’ (or ‘For’) line on your check. If using Hope Chapel’s giving envelopes, write it on the line that says ‘Special for’.

Unless otherwise designated by you, your donations to Hope Chapel Missions will be distributed to our short- and long-term missionaries based on decisions by our church council.  They know the needs of each, and they also know the teams that are being assembled for the short-term missions on any given date.

The remaining non-profits will be spotlighted periodically while I’m walking…

CALIFORNIA ABILITIES NETWORK (ICAN) – Hermosa Beach, CA

(See ‘How to donate’ below)

The Executive Director of ICAN is one of Hope Chapel’s pastors, Scott Elliott – Hope Chapel partners with their Summer Camps each year, and we provide a Sunday School program every week as well. I have been teaching in this Sunday School class for about 5 years, and I ALWAYS leave with a smile on my face.  My students “paint my day in sunshine”! 🙂  ICAN is in a unique position in that it is considered a faith-based organization, but has been granted funding by the State of California. As mentioned above, some facets of ICAN fall under Hope Chapel’s ‘Special Ministries’, but its main focus is on the greater community of special needs adults and has an independent group of donors apart from the church.  From their website: “ICAN is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the community for over 35 years. We provide quality recreational, employment, empowerment, and socialization programs for Southern California’s adults with physical and developmental disabilities meeting the needs of not just the individual, but his or her entire family. These events provide all participants the opportunity to enjoy meaningful experiences and build fulfilling relationships. We currently serve over 140 clients at our events throughout the year by offering both overnight camps and day trips for all ages. Each camp is full of fun and enriching activities that are memorable and impactful.”

INTERVARSITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP, USA – Madison, WI

(See ‘How to donate’ below)

This organization is dear to my heart partly because of the magnificent work they do on college campuses all around the world – and partly because my high school best friend’s husband is one of their Regional Directors!  We’ve supported this ministry for decades and my friends Margie & John Criswell have devoted their lives to it.  Intervarsity requires their workers to raise their own support money, so any donations generated thru Soles 4 Hope would go to their personal support.

InterVarsity is an interdenominational campus ministry whose vision is to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed, and world changers developed.  Through the creation of 985 witnessing communities on 649 campuses across the nation, students are called to follow Jesus – not just during college years, but in their professions, their families and in their churches throughout their lives.  John has worked for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for more than 20 years.  He currently serves as the Regional Director for the Southeast Region (Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and the panhandle of Florida).  He leads a team of 45 staff and volunteers who are  “Multiplying Disciples Through Missional Communities to Reach Every Campus in the Southeast.”

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY – Colorado Springs, CO

(See ‘How to donate’ below)

I have loved this ministry, their books and radio broadcast since the time our children were babies – Focus on the Family played a large role in helping us raise our boys to be Godly sons, husbands and fathers.  I owe them a huge debt of gratitude! From their website: “Focus on the Family is a global Christian ministry dedicated to helping families thrive. We provide help and resources for couples to build healthy marriages that reflect God’s design, and for parents to raise their children according to morals and values grounded in biblical principles. We’re here to come alongside families with relevance and grace at each stage of their journey. We support families as they seek to teach their children about God and His beautiful design for the family, protect themselves from the harmful influences of culture and equip themselves to make a greater difference in the lives of those around them.

THE DREAM CENTER – Los Angeles, CA

(See ‘How to donate’ below)

I first encountered Caroline Barnett when she was the guest speaker at one of our church’s women’s events (she has roots at Hope Chapel from when she was a teen).  She and her husband Matthew have experienced many miracles as they run The Dream Center in Los Angeles’ inner city. It’s a remarkable and inspiring story, but most impressive is the changing and softening of hardened lives through their ministry and faithful service.  On that day, Caroline challenged all of us to “be willing to walk on water”. I stood up with most of the women in that room and pledged that I would.  I had no idea where that would take me.  I assumed it would be to donate or volunteer with The Dream Center – but now here I am, about to embark on this journey from Canada to Mexico.  When I have doubts, I remember my pledge – and I have chosen to support The Dream Center as one of my charities and as a huge “Thank You” to Caroline for helping me with the ‘courage’ part of the process! From their website: We are building a community of resilient people whose lives have been redeemed by God’s love. The lives we change are not merely examples of God’s power to restore broken lives. The men, women and families we help also go on to share that love with others, to pass on the hope they have been given, and to make transformation possible for others”.

DESIRE STREET MINISTRIES – Atlanta, GA

(See ‘How to donate’ below)

My husband’s a die-hard Florida Gator! One of his favorite players is Danny Wuerffel, the Gator quarterback who led the team to the National Title in 1996 and won the Heisman Trophy.  Danny is a ‘star’ off the field as well.  When his NFL career ended, he got involved with Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans Ninth Ward, to help this impoverished neighborhood (and particularly its children) to rise above their circumstances. He is now their Executive Director. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed Danny’s home, devastated the ministry and scattered the children of the area, DSM moved its headquarters numerous times – and a serendipitous turn of events eventually brought Danny and his family to the same Decatur, GA church that our son & his family attend! The dark days of Hurricane Katrina forced a broader view for the ministry, and they are now committed to helping communities throughout the Southeast.  They have returned full force back to New Orleans as well! Their mission: “To love our neighbor by revitalizing impoverished neighborhoods through spiritual and community development.”

How to donate:

Go to Desire Street Ministries and fill out the donation form
In the ‘Message to DSM’ section, write Soles 4 Hope Trek

OTHER CHURCH MISSIONS – Pacific Coast, USA

Larry and I want this journey to count for as much good as possible – as I contacted churches along my route asking for logistical support, I was impressed by all the good they are doing in their own communities and around the world for The Kingdom.

We don’t want to limit God – so we have offered them the opportunity to use my trek in any way within their own congregations that might energize their church body to support their own missions & ministries.

Knowing that churches up and down my route would also benefit from my trek will give me added motivation – and it would give me great joy to be praying for their efforts as they are praying for mine!
