Elk Meadow Cabins to Dry Lagoon SP

39 Years!!! When I started this trek, I thought Larry & I would be apart for our 39th wedding anniversary – but for reasons totally unrelated to the date, he decided to accompany me this week… bonus!

We got last-minute dinner reservations tonight in what ended up being a packed house 25 miles back up the road at the Requa Inn, a B&B that was recommended by a woman in Crescent City (who happens to work there) earlier in the week. Dinner is served family-style, and we were seated with 3 other delightful couples: From Eureka CA, Portland OR, and Sarasota FL (near where we grew up).  The food was awesome, the company was stimulating, and the setting on the Klamath River was serene. The only drawback was the 25-mile drive back to Orick afterwards (we were the only ones not staying at the inn). I do try to avoid driving at night around here because I’m so scared I’m gonna hit a little ‘critter’.  But I’m happy to report that we were not responsible for any wildlife fatalities tonight!

Our walk today started with an unexpected knock on the door – Donna had arrived and once again drove us to our starting point, so we were able to cancel the bus reservation.  As we walked through our ‘hometown’ of Orick we saw the bus at one of its stops and chatted across the street with our driver, Ruth, and she wished us well. Nice lady… By then we were already about 3+ miles into the day – thanks to Donna, it was nice to finish at 1:30 instead of 3pm if we had taken the bus!

Larry really got thrown into the deep end of the pool with some of the narrow roads today.  We had a lot of lane changes – generally opting for the ‘outside’ of curves, and some were blind.  “Stop, Look and LISTEN” was the order of the day. But we weathered it well – good practice for down the coast a bit when there will be the added complexity of cliffs on those narrow roads!

In this same area where we saw 4 herds of elk yesterday, we saw only 1 herd, and it was at least 1/2 mile away.  But it WAS unique in that they were along the shoreline – my photo isn’t really great because of the distance, but it seemed incongruous to see animals typically associated with forests frolicking along an ocean beach!

And yet another oddity in one of the nearby lagoons:

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. ~ Zephaniah 3:17
